Class Meets: Tues & Thurs, Section A: 9:30 AM – 12:20 pm; Section B: 1:30 – 4:20 pm

NO Lab on Mon., Jan. 16 & Feb. 20  NO Class Tues., Jan 31 & Thurs., March 1

Assisted Lab Meets: Mondays & Wednesdays:11:30 am-12:30 pm & 1:30-5pm. Unassisted Lab Tues & Thurs. 4:20 – 5:30 pm

Lockers MUST be cleared out by Tuesday, March 20 and ALL projects and personal belongings must be removed from the studio by that date as well.

Requirements for this course are the completion of five specific, assigned projects, each worth one credit.  In addition, there will be basic exercise-in-technique assignments designed to develop dexterity in the handling of clay, specifically handbuilding methods including pinch, coil and slab, and surface treatments including underglaze and slip decoration (261), glaze, and overglaze.  Participation in clay mixing is also required.* Throwing on the wheel is optional and NOT required except for those students enrolled in Art 261, which focuses on developing throwing skills on the wheel**.  There will be two written exams as noted below.

*for Art 260 students during lab.

**Participation in glaze and engobe mixing is required for 261 students during lab.

Week 1         1/3 Introduction & discussion and slide presentation on first project; PINCH technique introduced; 1/5 

 1/ 3-5                surface technique: underglazes; wheelthrowing techniques: centering, the ‘cylinder’, and shaping.

 

Week  2

1/9-12

 

Continuation from week 1; 1/10 handbuilding technique coil and 1/12 slab; basic wheel throwing techniques: bowls and footing/trimming; surface technique: lowfire glazes; 3 sketches due for 1st project on Thursday 1/12 ;

Pulled handles demonstrated.  During  the M/W Lab, clay mixing begins and demo on throwing bowls on 1/11..

 

 

Week 3

1/ 17-19

NO LAB on Mon., 1/16, HOLIDAY. Discussion and slide presentation of second project, 1/17; Cone 10 high fire glazes discussed and demonstrated as surface technique; 1/19 wheel throwing: plates & engobes for 261. 

 

Week 4

1/ 23-26

Discussion and slide presentation on third project and sketches due for 2nd project on Tues.,1/24; load cone 10 gas kiln on Wed., 1/25 and fire off on Thurs., 1/26 so all Art 260 pinch pots and Art 261 A-body cylinders should be glazed and included in this 1st firing; during lab, Wed., 1/25 demo on throwing shapes. 

 

Week 5

1/ 30-2/2

 Mon.,1/30 unload gas kiln; NO CLASS ON TUESDAY 1/31 Professional Development Day; sketches due for 3rd project on Thurs., 2/2; midterm and group critique/grading of project #1 on Thurs., 2/2; discussion of project #4.

 

Week 6

2/6-9

Tues., 2/7 slide presentation on Robert Arneson; sketches/proposals due for 4th project Thurs, 2/9 additional wheel- throwing techniques: during lab on Wed., 2/8 demo on sectional forms; surface techniques utilizing overglazes.  Project #2 should be completed by the end of the week.

 

Week 7

2/ 13-16

Sketches due for 5th & FINAL project Tues.,2/14: short discussion and slide presentation: Etruscan ceramics.  Wheel throwing techniques: in lab, Wed., 2/15 throwing lids; Project #3 should be completed by the end of the week.

 

Week 8

2/ 21-23

NO LAB on Mon., 2/20, HOLIDAY; brief discussion and slide presentation on Pre-Columbian ceramics on 2/21; load 2nd cone 10 gas kiln on Wed.2/22 & fire  off on Thurs., 2/23; glaze making discussion and demo in lab on Wed., 2/22;  project #4 should be completed by the end of the week.

 

Week 9

2/ 27-29

Unload gas kiln on Mon., 2/27; last week for working with WET clay/greenware.  NO WORK WITH WET CLAY IN THE STUDIO AFTER  WED., 2/29!  NO CLASS ON THURSDAY, 3/1, College Issues Day!!!

 

Week 10

3/ 5-8

Group critique on project  2 on Tues., 3/6 and FINAL exam and group critique and grading on project 3 on Thurs, 3/8; lab clean-up begins.

 

Week 11

3/ 12-15

3/ 19-20

Mon, 3/12 last bisque firing for cone 10 firing;  Wed., 3/14 load final cone 10 firing and fire off Thurs., 3/15 studio clean-up and clean-out continues during lab hours; final 06-04 low fire glaze firings Thurs., 3/15.

 

Mon.,3/19 unload cone 10 gas kiln and electric kilns; Tues., 3/20 FINAL group critique and grading of projects 4 & 5 and other ungraded projects during regular class meeting time!  Have a great break!
