                                                           ONE TYPE OF PALETTE IS CALLED “SEAL-A-     PALETTE” FOR WATER

                                                          MEDIA. IT HAS 12 SMALL REMOVABLE CUPS WITH AIRTIGHT CAPS

                                                          FOR STORING MIXED PAINT AS WELL AS 3 WELLS FOR MIXING

                                                          PAINT.

THE CUPS ARE RATHER SMALL SO I ALSO RECOMMEND USING EMPTY 35MM

FILM CANISTERS TO STORE PAINT IN (ASK FOR THEM WHEREVER THEY DEVELOP FILM).

-PAINT:          WE WILL BE USING ACRYLIC PAINTS EXCLUSIVELY FOR THIS CLASS.

                        THERE ARE A FEW FACTS ABOUT ACRYLICS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

 

                        ALTHOUGH THEY CAN BE DILUTED AND CLEANED UP WHEN WET WITH WATER, ONCE DRY, ACRYLICS ARE NOT RESOLUBLE, THEY ARE PERMANENT.

 

                        ACRYLICS TEND TO DRY 1 TO 3 VALUE STEPS DARKER THAN WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE WHEN WET – THIS WILL TAKE SOME TIME GETTING USE TO SO GIVE YOUR SELF ENOUGH TIME FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT.

 

                        LASTLY, ACRYLICS ARE MADE WITH AMMONIA-BASED POLYMERS AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE USED WITH GOOD VENTILATION – THIS CAN BE DECEIVING AS ACRYLICS TEND TO HAVE NO DISAGREEABLE ODOR.

 

 

      COLORS (OR HUES): IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, GET LIQUID ACRYLIC PAINT THAT

                                                COME IN 4 fl oz JARS.

                                                BUT IF YOU MUST GET THE THICKER PAINT IN TUBES YOU

                                                MUST ALSO PURCHASE A JAR OF ACRYLIC MATTE MEDIUM

                                                (at least 8 fl oz) IN ORDER TO "LIQUIFY" THE PAINT WITHOUT

                                                LOSING MUCH OF ITS OPACITY.

      COLORS (OR HUES) continued:

                         THE PRIMARY COLORS OF RED, YELLOW, AND BLUE ARE OUR MOST

                                                              IMPORTANT AS MOST OTHER COLORS CAN BE MIXED FROM THEM. THE PRIMARIES MUST BE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO SPECTRUM COLORS. FOR EXAMPLE, A GOOD SPECTRUM BLUE SHOULD HAVE LITTLE OR NO GREEN IN IT NOR ANY VIOLET OR RED IN IT; A SPECTRUM YELLOW SHOULD HAVE NO ORANGE OR GREEN IN IT; AND A SPECTRUM RED SHOULD HAVE NO ORANGE OR VIOLET (CRIMSON) IN IT.

 

WHEN IT COMES TO PURCHASING PIGMENTS IN SPECTRUM (COLOR WHEEL) HUES THIS CAN ALL SEEM VERY THEORETICAL INDEED.

 

SOME PAINT MANUFACTURERS LIKE GOLDEN ACRYLICS HAS ACTUALLY MADE THE PRIMARIES FOR US. THESE ARE PRIMARY CYAN (BLUE), PRIMARY MAGENTA (RED), AND PRIMARY YELLOW BUT THESE ARE OFTEN DIFFICULT TO FIND AND SOMETIMES DO NOT WORK AS WELL AS SOME OTHER PIGMENTS IN MIXTURES TO CREAT SECONDARY AND TERTIARY HUES.

 

CHOOSE YOUR HUES FROM THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF PIGMENTS BELOW. THESE ARE USUALLY CONSIDERED WITHIN AN ACCEPTABLE RANGE OF THE SPECTRUM PRIMARIES. I RECOMMEND GOLDEN ACRYLICS BRAND FOR THEIR PROVEN QUALITY BUT YOU MAY PURCHASE ANY PROFESSIONAL LEVEL QUALITY BRAND - JUST TRY TO STAY WITH ONE BRAND - IN GENERAL THE SAME BRANDS TEND TO MIX BETTER.

      OTHER HUES RECOMMENDED FOR "TWEEKING " SECONDARY & TERTIARY MIXTURES ARE: YELLOW OCHRE, BURNT SIENNA, QUINACRIDONE VIOLET, &

                                                                    ULTRAMARINE BLUE.
