Course description and outcomes

Develops basic functional language ability in spoken and written Chinese. Students practice sounds and tones, vocabulary, and grammatical constructions. Students learn both traditional and simplified characters and practice using Chinese in authentic situations.

GRADING AND EXAMINATIONS

Attendance 20% Arriving late, leaving early, or behaving disruptively will lower your grade. You should have at least two classmates as your study group. When you miss a class, your group can help you catch up. It will be your own responsibility to find out what you have missed and the assigned homework.

Homework 20% In order to receive full points, homework needs to be turned in on time and to be fully corrected afterwards. Late or unfinished homework will only get 5 out of 10 points.

Class performance 10%  Includes Class Work Preparation and Classroom participation.  It is important to practice speaking in class.

Tests and presentation 30%  We will have 2 tests and 1 presentation. If you miss a test, you will get a chance to make it up. However, you won’t get a chance to make up the oral part of a test. You may lose 10-20% of your results of this quiz

Final  Exam 20% The sections of the final exam are similar to every lesson’s tests, and it will be comprehensive of the whole quarter’s work. It may consist of Listening, Reading, and Writing. Therefore, coming to class and doing your homework is very important.

Grading System:

A :  94% - 100%

A- :  < 94% - 90%

 

B+ : < 90% - 87%

B : < 87% – 84%

B- : < 84% – 80%

C+ : < 80% – 77%

C : < 77% – 74%

C- :  < 74% – 70%

D+ : < 70% – 67%

D : < 67% - 64%

 D- : < 64% - 61%

F : < 61% - 0%

We also have BC Chinese Culture Clubs and Language Exchange Program. Students can help you to practices your pronunciation. They are Chinese students at BC and UW. I will post the detailed information on the class site.

When you are in doubt about any behavior, consult your instructor during office hours:  we recognize the judgment of the instructor as the final authority in these matters.

When disruptive behavior occurs, instructors will speak to or e-mail the students concerned.  Those students are then responsible for ending the disruptions at once.  Failure to do so may result in removal of the students from class.
