Course description

Introduces functional language ability in spoken and written Chinese. Continues elements of Chinese culture. Students practice sounds and tones, vocabulary, and grammatical constructions, practice pronunciation and Chinese characters writing and use Chinese in authentic situations. Recommended: CHIN& 121 or permission of instructor.

 GRADING AND EXAMINATIONS

Attendance 20% Arriving late, leaving early, or behaving disruptively will lower your grade. You should have at least two classmates as your study group. When you miss a class, your group can help you catch up. It will be your own responsibility to find out what you have missed and the assigned homework.

 Homework 20% In order to receive full points, homework needs to be turned in on time and to be fully corrected afterwards. Any homework assignments that are late will not get full points. If your HW is late for 1 day, you will lose 1 point on this HW. If your HW is late for 2 days, you will lose 2 points on this HW. If your HW is late for 3 days or more than 3 days, you will get zero point on this HW.

 Class performance 10%  Includes Class Work Preparation and Classroom participation. It is important to practice speaking Chinese in class. Also, playing with cell phone, chatting or eating is not allowed in the classroom. 

Tests and presentation 30%  We will have 2 tests and 1 presentation. Test 1: Lesson 9-11; Test 2: Lesson 12-14; If you miss a test, you will get one chance to make it up. As for the presentation, you will use the Chinese vocabulary you have learned from L9 to L16 to make up a dialogue and present the dialogue with your teammates in front of the class.   

Final  Exam 20% The sections of the final exam are similar to every lesson’s tests, and it will be comprehensive of the whole quarter’s work. It may consist of Listening, Reading, and Writing. Therefore, coming to class and doing your homework is very important.

 Grading System:

A :  94% - 100%

A- :  < 94% - 90%

 

B+ : < 90% - 87%

B : < 87% – 84%

B- : < 84% – 80%

C+ : < 80% – 77%

C : < 77% – 74%

C- :  < 74% – 70%

D+ : < 70% – 67%

D : < 67% - 64%

 D- : < 64% - 61%

F : < 61% - 0%

Those students are then responsible for ending the disruptions at once.  Failure to do so may result in removal of the students from class.
