Instructions: Please answer the following questions completely, on a separate piece of paper, and use Rothwell to inform your answers. Two to three pages word-processed pages (double-spaced) is a guideline for this journal.  I prefer your answers to be word processed for ease of reading! ;)

 

Ch. 8

            1. After reading about Integrative Problem Solving on pages 242-3 of Rothwell:

 

            A. Explain how this method of problem solving could be applied to your group’s issue or problem. Be specific and use example

 

            B.  What benefits do you see in using this creative method for your group’s symposium project? Be specific and use examples.

 

 

Ch. 9

2.  Describe a specific example for each of the three types of power as seen in your Case Study or Democracy & Equality Project teams (dominance, prevention, and empowerment).

 

3.  What are the verbal and non-verbal indicators of power involved in each of the above examples that you have noticed in your teams? Describe using specific examples of verbal and non-verbal indicators used by people on your team.

 

4. Where does the power in your teams come from? Specifically apply these power resources to your examples from above to answer this question.

 

5.  Compliance, Alliance, Resistance, Defiance and Significance (C-A-R-D-S) are responses to the transacting of power in small groups. When you consider your own group members and the transacting of power, describe two of C-A-R-D-S types of responses you have observed.

 

Ch. 10

            6.  How would you classify your group’s communication style of conflict management? Use Rothwell to support your answers with characteristics of the style your group uses, and describe specific examples.

 

            7.  How do your group’s communication styles of conflict management differ on the task and social dimensions of small groups? (See Rothwell and give specific examples.)
