Bellevue College Certification Policy for Washington State Medical Assistant – Phlebotomy Certification (MA-P)

Scope:

The following policy applies to any student or graduate of Bellevue College, who applies to the Washington State Department of Health for Medical Assistant – Phlebotomy certification (MA-P) using the education and training received through a Bellevue College program to satisfy the required training indicated in RCW 18.360.040 (3) and WAC 246-827-0400 under either option (1) or (2).

This policy was validated on October 4, 2013 by the Executive Director for Health Systems Quality Assurance, Washington State Department of Health, and will continue in enforcement for Bellevue College programs until such time as Bellevue College can no longer support the requirements, or such time that the statute is changed. Bellevue College strives to meet the educational requirements to facilitate certification for our graduates.  Bellevue College does not issue or guarantee certification with any jurisdictional body.

This policy does NOT apply to jurisdictions outside of Washington State. For certification in another jurisdiction, you will need to contact that jurisdiction for their specific requirements. It is recommended that students who need to apply for certification with jurisdictions outside of Washington State pursue options and testing for nationally accredited certification.  For phlebotomy, this may include:

Definitions:

Bellevue College offers several different programs that may include phlebotomy education and training.  For clarity, the phlebotomy program will be referred to as the traditional program, as it includes both the classroom / laboratory courses as well as a phlebotomy specific practicum (externship). These required phlebotomy program courses are numbered AHEL 110, AHEL 112, AHEL 118 (formerly HPRO 141 and HPRO 144). To be considered for the traditional route, you must have completed ALL phlebotomy specific courses, as well as the prerequisite courses listed in the college catalog for the phlebotomy program.

Any program that includes phlebotomy education and training, however does not follow the phlebotomy program will be referred to as the non-traditional program.  This includes programs that require the classroom / laboratory course, however do not require the phlebotomy specific practicum (externship); rather substitute a practicum specific to that program.
