Our Students

The Interior Design program at BCC attracts a variety of students of all ages. Many are "returning students" who are preparing for or reacting to career or life changes. Some are here to reward themselves with an opportunity to "do what they've always wanted to do." And others are first-time college students who are eager to pursue their first careers. In any case, a characteristic that they all share is the enthusiasm for learning about design, and a willingness to push themselves to discover new things about themselves. Students help to set and maintain the high standards for which the BCC Interior Design department is known, and they help one another to reach the goals of professional preparation and excellence.

Our beginning students typically have a wide-range of backgrounds and abilities. If you are interested in interior design, but are concerned about your lack of previous training, or "artistic ability," you should know that design ability is not innate. Design skills, visual awareness and "good taste" can be acquired and developed, and students often discover previously-hidden talents upon enrolling. Aptitude is important, but interest, motivation, dedication, and enthusiasm are even more necessary to be a successful interior design student. Individual advising will help you discover your talents, select classes that accommodate your needs, and adapt to the demands of the program.

Students at Graduation

Student participation in extracurricular activities is essential. BCC's program has an active Interior Design Students Association as well as large Student Chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers and International Interior Design Association. These groups meet each month to provide informational programs, a connection to professional organizations and networking and social activities for students.

All students enrolled in the Interior Design program automatically become members of the BCC Interior Design Student Association (IDSA). This student organization is headed by an elected governing board. Students are invited to attend programs featuring leading designers, representatives from the design industry and other relevant topics.

The organization also provides an academic and social support network for students as they make their way through the rigorous and time-consuming courses in the Interior Design program. A website keeps the membership informed about events and topics of interest. An informal evening get-together is usually held early in fall quarter, to welcome new students and to acquaint them with the school and the program offerings.

A gala open house, the Interior Design Showcase, is held every year during spring quarter. Student work is displayed, work of graduating students is featured, and awards and scholarships are announced at this elegant capstone event for the year.
