Course Information

Course Outcomes:

Dance 151

Dance 152

How Outcomes Will Be Met:

Students will learn the basics of contemporary dance movement technique. Each class will begin with a set warm-up series that will help improve strength, flexibility, balance and mobility.  Students will also learn movement phrases that emphasize tempo, timing, rhythm and weight shift.  Class work will not only focus on the physical execution of contemporary dance but also the dynamic range of how movement is performed.  Students will be asked to view and review (1-2 pages) a live dance performance or a dance on film (dvd, YouTube) per approval of instructor.

Grading:

Grading is based on attendance, participation and mastery of technique and movement phrases.  Unlike some academic courses, the final grade is accumulative.  Individual progress is considered.  Movement combinations learned in class are reviewed and graded throughout the quarter.  Grading scale is as follows:

60% of Grade

1.

Attendance

20% of Grade

2.

Improved understanding of contemporary movement technique, dynamics, rhythm and sequencing

10% of Grade

3.

In-class presentation of learned movement material/phrases

10% of Grade

4.

1-2 page written review of live dance performance or approved video

Although grading dance is by nature subjective, grades are based on attendance, participation and individual progress toward mastery of technique and performance.  More than three unexcused absences will begin to affect your grade. Please notify instructor of any absences to avoid grade reduction.
