English 071-074 is a 10-credit developmental English course (the number refers to the quarter that the course is offered in, not the level of the course) linked with the Reading Lab for an additional 1-2 credits under English 080. English 089, Preparation for College Reading, is a 5-credit course linked with the Reading Lab for an additional 1-2 credits under English 080. Students at this level develop skills in critical analysis of textbook readings. In the Reading Lab, 089 students focus on advanced vocabulary, inferential and literal comprehension skills, and reading speed.
English 106, Critical Reading in the Humanities, is a 5 credit college level course that focuses on developing higher level cognitive skills. This course is linked with the Reading Lab for an additional 1-2 credits under English 180, a graded course that may be transferred with 106. (Check with four year institutions regarding transferability.) Students at this level should be practicing college level material in the lab, including vocabulary and inferential comprehension, with reading rates at 300 words per minute or higher.
