BC women’s basketball went 2-1 at the Skagit Tourney this past week. After defeating Grays Harbor College 62-43, the Bulldogs lost to Spokane 61-55 before bouncing back in the consolation over Kwantlen (BC) by a score of 66-57. Playing with only seven to eight players due to injuries, the Bulldogs relied heavily on a few key players who were forced to play nearly the entire game over the three-day stretch. In the opening win over Grays Harbor on Sunday December 28, Mikayla Jones scored 14 points and also had seven steals. Jessica Hopkins also added 14 points. Shelby Kassuba had 13 points and six steals while Eboney Jackson provided eight points and led the team with eight rebounds. In the second round loss to Spokane, Kassuba and Jackson provided punch both scoring wise and underneath with the boards as they had 14 points/12 rebounds and 16 points/11 rebounds respectively. Bellevue had 23 turnovers in the game as they struggled to gain any momentum during the entire 40 minutes. In the consolation game win over Kwantlen, BC jumped out to a 15 point lead at halftime and never looked back. Kassuba was 9-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line to lead BC with 23 points. Jackson scored 19 and also had five blocked shots. The Bulldogs are now 8-6 on the year and play their final non-league contest this Saturday January 3 at 5PM hosting Douglas College of British Columbia.
