The annual Blue-Grey fall world series which wraps up the six-week fall season for Bellevue College baseball is underway. After two games, the series is tied at one game apiece. On Friday October 9, Team Usselman’s pitchers blanked Team Johnson by a score of 3-0. Usselman did much of the damage himself as he plated a double to score Lawyer Braun and scored an insurance run himself on a single by Grant DeLappe. The recent North Carolina State commit then  closed out the game on the mound, striking out Evan Johnson to end the game. Eli Gallo led Team Usselman with two hits. Team Johnson’s pitchers were equally impressive, allowing only four hits in the six inning game. In the fourth, two consecutive walks by Robbie Shineman loaded the bases and set the stage for Jordan LaFave, whose sacrifice fly scored Gallo for the game-winner.

On Monday October 12, Team Johnson won a thriller in extra innings with a big 5-run inning to win. Team Usselman was on their way to making it a 2-0 lead in the series as they rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the final inning of regulation play. John Samons, who led the inning off with a leadoff walk, could not close the door and was removed by Coach Evan Johnson in favor of ace Cody Anderson. Sean Clancy greeted him with a single to left to score Shane Stober to tie the game 2-2, but a coaching mishap by third base coach Brooks Hanson ended the rally as Hanson waved runner DeLappe home on the Clancy hit to shallow left field and was thrown out with ease. Heading into extra innings, Team Johnson exploded for five runs. After a strikeout to lead off the inning, pitcher Drew Lomsdalen appeared to be in control with one out but an error by shortstop Jordan LaFave opened the floodgates as two singles, two triples, and walk soon followed for Team Johnson’s big inning. Danny Torlai was 2-for-2 and had the game winner, poking a bases-loaded single to left that began the scoring spree for Team Johnson.

Game three begins today at 2:45 with Hanson and Elijah Hill slated to pitch for Team Usselman while Team Johnson will counteract with pitchers Shineman and Torlai.  The five-game series will continue Wednesday before taking a day off on Thursday and will end Friday October 16 with a special end-of-fall Friday night lights game at 7:00 p.m. All BC baseball parents are encouraged to attend a free italian buffet dinner during the final game of the fall season.
