Bellevue College women’s basketball defeated visiting Skagit Valley tonight 75-68 in the marquee matchup in the NWAC, as both teams were tied for first place in the North Region heading into the showdown at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. The win puts Bellevue (9-1 league, 19-4 overall) in outright first place, although Peninsula, who was also tied with Bellevue and Skagit Valley at 8-1, plays tomorrow at Everett.

The Bulldogs came out strong, jumping out to a 21-12 lead after one quarter. The lead extended to as much as 15 before Skagit Valley gradually crept back. The lead was shrunk to two late in the game before the play of the night sealed the win for Bellevue as Mikayla Jones stole the ball, scored, and was fouled on the play. Jones would proceed to make her free throw to put Bellevue up by five with a minute to go.

Jones and Shelby Kassuba, the two sophomores who have been instrumental in Bellevue’s run this year, led BC. Jones had 18 points, 4 blocked shots, 3 steals, and 6 assists. Kassuba was 9-of-14 from the field and had 21 points. Kassuba was a threat offensively not only down under but displayed touch from the outside as well. Freshman Erin Hamilton had 11 points, and led Bellevue underneath with 6 rebounds, and had several key defensive stops late in the game with 3 blocked shots.

The win was also revenge for the Bulldogs, whose only loss was in January to Skagit Valley in Mount Vernon.
