Although the Bellevue College men’s basketball team’s win streak was snapped, the 68-64 loss on the road to first place Peninsula on Saturday night is an indicator that Bellevue can play with anyone.  If the team can manage to squeak into the playoffs this week, the ‘dogs have shown they can win it all like anyone else based on their competitiveness against the top teams this year.

After trailing by five at the end of the first half, Bellevue rallied in the second half shooting 64% from the field. Unfortunately, Peninsula matched the Bulldogs offensively in the second half, preventing any significant momentum swing.

Bellevue was victimized by one Peninsula player, reserve Dimitri Amos, who came off the bench to lead the Pirates with 25 points and 7 rebounds.

Bellevue was led down under by Quentin Moore, Jack Walton, and Calvin Dennis. The three scored 17, 15, and 12 respectively for BC. The outside perimeter play was shut down, as BC’s typically potent outside threat was held to just 9 points. Walton also had 12 rebounds in a mammoth effort on the road.

Bellevue is now 5-7 in league and 14-13 overall. Things get interesting this week as Bellevue closes out regular season play this Wednesday February 24 at 7:00 p.m. vs. Whatcom and Sunday February 28 at Everett (1:00 p.m.). Both Whatcom and Everett lead Bellevue by two games, as Bellevue, Whatcom, Everett, and Edmonds (6-6) are duking it out for the second, third, and fourth and final playoff spot. One team will be eliminated after this Sunday’s regular season finale. Wednesday’s home game vs. Whatcom will also be the final game for BC’s lone two sophomores; Aqeel Williams and Brian Zehr. It will be a small sophomore night as Zehr is BC’s lone returner from last year’s veteran team. This year’s squad features only two sophomores, and nine freshmen.
