Bellevue College Baseball pulled off the unusual over this past weekend as the Bulldogs not only scheduled a tripleheader but won all three on Friday March 11 over host Treasure Valley CC. The Bulldogs won by scores of 3-1, 8-7, and 7-3. The squad then came back the next morning to sweep another doubleheader with wins over Treasure Valley and Grays Harbor.

The Bulldogs showed depth and grit by enduring an eight hour bus ride to Ontario, Oregon, arriving just before midnight. The squad then had a wake up call at 6:00 a.m. and had to travel 20 miles to the College of Idaho in Caldwell, ID due to wet field conditions at Treasure Valley. The squad then reeled off three wins in a row. Cody Anderson struck out 10 in a pitchers’ duel with Bellevue coming out on top 3-1 in the first game at 9:00 a.m. Danny Torlai and Joe Wainhouse both had opposite field home runs to lead Bellevue’s offense. In game two, after taking the lead halfway through the game, then giving it back up, BC rallied behind the stellar relief efforts of North Carolina State signee Zach Usselman and scored three runs in the top of the ninth to win it. Torlai led off the inning with a double to center field and was followed by the big hit of the game by Evan Johnson, whose double brought home two for the win. Usselman dominated in relief, as he did not surrender a hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief for the win. Game two showed signs of fatigue on both sides, with a total of 9 errors (5 for Bellevue, 4 for Treasure Valley) in the game. In game three, Torlai again was a hero by coming in relief of starter Dominic DeMiero. Torlai threw 4 1/3 innings of long relief and surrendered only one hit and zero runs while striking out five. DeMiero and Torlai combined for 12 strikeouts on the mound. The ‘dogs again rallied late by putting up 5 runs in the eighth inning after trailing the game into the late innings. RBI singles by Oscar White and Dylan Vchulek set the table for the big blow; a two-RBI hit by Austin Pinorini to give Bellevue a safe lead.

On Saturday March 12, the Bulldogs then followed the tripleheader sweep with a 10:00 a.m. doubleheader at Treasure Valley. In game one, BC won 5-2 as Drew Lomsdalen got the win on the mound with John Samons recording the save. It was the second straight week the Lomsdalen-Samons combo have delivered a win-save in stellar fashion. Vchulek led the offense with three hits while Wainhouse and Tino Peleti each had two. In the team’s fifth and final game over the two day period, the ‘dogs topped Grays Harbor 11-2. The Chokers were in Ontario, OR to play Treasure Valley following Bellevue’s visit over the weekend, and started their road trip with a neutral site game against BC. Brooks Hanson received a spot start and tossed a no-hitter through his four innings of work before giving way to Kash Koltermann and Wainhouse. White was the hot hitter for BC, going 4-for-5. Evan Slate had three hits for Bellevue.

The quick five wins puts Bellevue at 9-1 on the year. The Bulldogs face Clark College for a four-game set this weekend. The squad is set to travel to Vancouver on Saturday March 19 for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader before returning home for a twin bill the following day against the Penguins. Weather may alter this weekend’s schedule, as it has for BC’s first two weekends of play.
