Three of the four current and former BCC Baseball players selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Draft have signed with their respective teams, according to BCC Head Coach Mark Yoshino.

Mike Lee, a graduate of Skyline High School in Issaquah has signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox, after being selected in the eighth round. Lee's signing comes on the heels of a stellar season playing for NAIA Oklahoma City University, which finished third at the 2008 NAIA World Series.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pounder posted a 10-2 record and 2.79 earned run average this year. He struck out 124 batters in 93.2 innings while walking 28, and opposing batters hit just .222 against him. Lee’s signature performance of the year was a two-hit shutout against top-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) on May 9 in the NAIA Region VI championships. He fanned 12 batters in a nine-inning, complete-game performance.

In his final year as a Bulldog, Lee was a standout on Bellevue's 2007 NWAACC Championship Team, posting a 6-1 record with a 1.95 ERA, and 60 strikeouts in 60 innings. He was an All-NWAACC Second Team and All-Northern Region First Team selection.

Blaine Hardy, another member of the 2007 NWAACC Championship team, signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals after being selected in the 22nd round. Hardy played the 2008 season with NAIA National Champion Lewis and Clark State, where he was used mainly as a reliever.

He posted an 8-1 record with a 2.48 ERA. He made 22 appearances, including eight starts, and helped combined on five shutouts during the season. He also picked up four saves. The left-hander pitched 76.1 innings and allowed 78 hits, 21 earned runs and 12 walks, but struck out 65. He held opponents to a .268 batting average.

Sophomore Brad Reid, a two time All-NWAACC First Team selection as a pitcher, has decided to stay close to home after inking a contract with the Seattle Mariners on June 9 at Safeco Field. Reid, a graduate of Decatur High School, was selected in the 30th round.

Reid attended Oregon State University following a stellar freshman season with the Bulldogs, where he posted the lowest ERA in the NWAACC (0.19), was an All Northern Region and All-NWAACC First Team selection, and clinched the NWAACC Championship for BCC, earning a save with three shutout innings of relief in the title game. When his situation at OSU didn't work out, Reid returned to BCC, where he once again established himself as a dominating presence in 2008. He sported a 0.56 ERA in accumulating a 7-1 record, and once again earned First Team All-Northern Region and All-NWAACC honors.

"We are excited when any of our guys get an opportunity to play at a higher level.  Getting a foot in the door in the professional ranks is the goal for any aspiring player coming from a 2 or 4 year college" said Yoshino. "Most guys out of college will never get a chance at the professional level; it’s an opportunity they can’t pass up.”

Stephen Foster, Bellevue's fourth draftee (selected in the 42nd round by the Atlanta Braves), will decide whether to sign a pro contract with the Braves or attend school later this summer.  If he opts to continue playing in college, Foster has already signed a letter of intent to pitch at Lewis-Clark State College.

BCC Baseball has been ranked as a top team in the Pacific Northwest for over 30 years. This past year was no exception as the team captured the 2007 NWAACC Championship after being ranked #1 in the NWAACC top 8 Coaches' Poll for most of the season. The squad also finished with a national ranking of 18th; putting Bellevue within the same group of other national powerhouses.

A strong reputation precedes the BCC baseball program. With several league titles to its name, a high number of winning teams, and top-notch facilities, it's no surprise that BCC baseball athletes consistently receive scholarships to 4-year colleges and universities.

Take a look at our track record:

  • In the last decade, Bellevue has had 37 players drafted in professional baseball; one of the highest numbers of 2-year colleges in the nation
  • BCC Baseball has not had a losing season in over 26 years
  • BCC Baseball has one of the top graduation rates in all of northwest community college athletics
  • Since it's early beginnings in 1970, BCC Baseball has captured 3 NWAACC titles (1973, 1979, 2007) and 18 region titles, including this past spring.
  • In 1999, Bellevue had more players selected in the professional
baseball draft than any other two-year college in the nation.
  • BCC has also sent an average of nine players each year onto the
four-year level for higher academic and athletic opportunities. This past year was another typical year of player success with 13 players receiving scholarships to play at the four-year level. Ten of those were to NCAA division I universities.
Courter Field

BCC takes pride in offering top-notch facilities such as Courter Field, one of the best playing fields in the region. These accomplishments set BCC Baseball apart from other colleges and offers a positive, rewarding experience and many opportunities for building athletic talent.
