With the end of the disastrous Cultural Revolution in 1976, Chinese literature bloomed once again, and Chinese fiction of the past thirty years has been lively and diverse. For each class we will discuss one or two stories that are both rewarding as literature and have something to say about contemporary Chinese culture. Authors will include Nobel Prize winners Gao Xingjian and Mo Yan. Texts (in English) will be provided and class discussion will be encouraged.
Dr. Shaw has a PhD in Chinese literature and has previously taught Chinese short stories in the TELOS program.
