TELOS - African History Since 1485

In 1485 the Portuguese arrived from across the Atlantic, opening Africa to Europe as never before. Starting with that event, each week we will focus on a topic of historical importance, as follows: 1) trade, 2) colonial rule, 3) independence, 4) development strategies, 5) ethnicity, 6) the arts, and 7) Africans in diaspora. There will be a reading or internet video assigned each week, to facilitate discussion of the cultural and moral dimensions of these topics.

Ellen Z. Berg lived in Lagos, Nigeria in 1970-72; the fast-paced social change she saw there prompted her to become a sociologist.
