  • A yellow (such as cadmium yellow)
  • Titanium white
  • Ivory Black
  • Burnt Sienna

Paint Brushes

We will use oils last, so feel free to buy only one set of brushes to use throughout the class.

  • One or two round sable or synthetic brushes (inexpensive ones are fine, as not as they come to a good point)
  • One or two sable flats
  • One “mop” brush, which is a soft wide round about 1″ in diameter (usually white in color)

Additional optional brushes:

  • 1″-wide sable of synthetic flat (for larger washes)
  • One or two bristle “filberts” (for acrylics and oils)
Surfaces
  • One 20″ x 30″ sheet of smooth (cold press) 140 lb. watercolor paper
  • One 20″ x 30″ sheet of smooth (cold press) medium weight illustration board.

We will cut these into quarters.

Additional optional surfaces:

If you want to work on canvas, please buy only pre-gessoed with acrylic gesso, not oil.  Inexpensive pre-gessoed canvas panels, pre-stretched canvas, or even a yard or so from a larger roll of canvas are acceptable.

Additional supplies:
  • One small can of acrylic gesso (acrylic gloss medium or clear gesso)
  • One can of workable fixative (Krylon or Blair brands)

You can also share these supplies to limit costs.

Bring this list to the art store, they can be very helpful and often offer a 10% discount at some stores if you are a BC student as well. Also, most basic materials are available at the BC North campus bookstore at (425) 564-5711.
