  • Former Microsoftee Chooses Bellevue College to Prepare for Career 2.0

After a 21-year career as a software developer and program manager at Microsoft, John Pennock chose Bellevue College to prepare for a second career as CEO of two technology startup companies: video-gaming company Game and Maze and virtual poster corkboard company ArcZap. To develop the ArcZap software, John used Node.js, a hot new JavaScript program he learned at Bellevue College, and its students will test the first public version of the software.

    Sampling the Mix

While still working for Microsoft, John took a mix of Continuing Ed courses at Bellevue College’s North Campus to prepare for Career 2.0. Along with business planning and web and database development courses, John took our popular Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction course, where he met his current software business partner, Chris Bennett.

After retiring from Microsoft in 2012, he continued studying at Bellevue College’s Main Campus. He then wrapped up his startup preparation by taking the Continuing Ed course So You Want to Be an Entreprenuer? Know What It Takes to Start Your Own Business.

    Broad Awareness Is Key

For those planning their own startup, John offers the following advice. “You need to become the master of many technologies. And you need a broad awareness of how a small business works. You need a full saw, not just a spear. But you don’t learn that in a big company. Continuing education can help you get the breadth of knowledge in many areas of business that you need to succeed” John concluded.

Our courses can help you develop the breadth of business knowledge and technology skills you need to launch a successful tech startup. And if you’d like to view and help beta test John’s virtual corkboard when it becomes available, please sign up at the ArcZap website.
