Since its inception in 1976, the TELOS educational program for retirees has been supported by the efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers known as the TELOS Advisory Guild, or TAG. Although they held no governing, fiduciary, or policy-making power, its members assisted in curriculum development, instructor recruitment, and sounding out student preferences, and these contributions have been invaluable to the smooth operation of the popular TELOS program.
All these functions were done solely by TAG before the addition of two key Continuing Education staffers who support TELOS part-time, noted Bill Stephens, the former longtime director of TELOS. The group also organized regular social activities, including a Winter Holiday party and a Summer BBQ potluck in August, and did fundraising to advance the mission of TELOS: supporting an active lifestyle among retirees.
Dean Janis Machala and her Continuing Education Division team have been very supportive of TELOS and its advisory group. But over time it became clear that the avid volunteers needed to become an organization officially sanctioned by Bellevue College. A creative resolution of the group’s unofficial status was found by combining its objectives with the student club structure used in many areas of the college. On July 9, 2013, after the approval of its application by Bellevue College Assistant Dean of Student Programs Faisal Jaswal, the group became an official student program and the first such program for Continuing Education.
Active TELOS students elected new officers, at-large board members, and committee chairs for the program or club, which has been renamed the TELOS Student Organization (TSO), on Wednesday, November 13, 2013.
The TSO’s leadership team includes:

“We are proud of the work our volunteers have done to help keep tuition low and encourage social engagement among TELOS students and faculty,” commented Chris Steele, former curriculum chair for TELOS. “We hope that more current students participate in the new student program so it can support the TELOS program even more effectively than TAG has in the past,” she added.
