Description:

Surveys the development of communication from prehistoric times to the present. Students analyze the influence of communication on historical, social, and technological changes in the U.S. and worldwide.

Outcomes:

After completing this class, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the development of printing influenced social, political, and religious development in the Renaissance.
  • Identify the major stages of the development of the newspaper, especially in the United States of America.
  • Discuss the impact of nineteenth-century technology (the steam-powered rotary press, telegraph, telephone, photography) on mass communication.
  • Identify the main stages of development and the cultural impact of the film industry.
  • Identify the main stages of development and the cultural impact of radio broadcasting.
  • Identify the main stages of development and the cultural impact of television.
  • Identify the impact of developing communication technologies.
