DUTEC 251 Breast Ultrasound for Mammographers • 3 Cr.


Reviews anatomy and physiology of the breast. Includes orientation to cross-sectional imaging of the breast, correlation with mammographic images, and characterization of normal and abnormal findings from a sonographic viewpoint. Prerequisite: DUTEC 250 or permission of Program Chair.


After completing this class, students should be able to:

  • Summarize the embryonic development of the breast
  • Describe the changes in a woman’s breast due to age, parity, hormone replacement, and the normal physiologic cycle.
  • Contrast the differences in the sonographic appearance of malignant and benign masses in both the male and female breast.
  • Identify image artifacts that aid and hinder diagnosis of the breast mass.
  • Demonstrate (in hands-on lab) techniques for breast biopsy to include: localizing the needle, scan technique, sterile procedure,, and physician coaching.
  • Discuss how the different imaging modalities complement each other in diagnosis of breast disease.
