IBP 067 Oral Business Communications • 4.5 Cr.

Description:

Designed to improve the spoken job performance of non-native English speaking employees. Focus is on developing formal presentation skills, effective telephony techniques and interpersonal communication strategies appropriate to the business environment. Prerequisite: Acceptance into program or permission of instructor.

Outcomes:

After completing this class, students should be able to:

  • Engage in building intercultural business relationships
  • Demonstrate understanding of the role of culture in business entertainment
  • Engage in socially appropriate small talk with business acquaintances
    • Answer the telephone appropriately in English
    • Take telephone messages
    • Relay telephone messages
    • Use appropriate tone on the telephone
    • Listen to and leave message on the answering machine
    • Use telephone directories
    • Make inquiries of companies
  • Plan a formal business presentation
  • Give a business presentation that includes an effective introduction, body and conclusion
  • Effectively use visual aids in a business presentation
  • Describe changing situations or trends in a business presentation
  • Provide smooth transitions in a business presentation
  • Participate effectively in business meetings
  • Engage in basic negotiations in business settings
