American Studies 287 – American Heroes

This exciting course provides students with basic knowledge and understanding of dynamic personalities in history who have influenced our lives and our culture. The course will include the contributions of all ethnic groups of Americans, analyzing the uniqueness of the manner in which they helped shape our nation. We will read the novel: Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero, and examine the life of this African American woman who risked her life to help many escape the bonds of slavery. We will also look at other cultural icons, and historical figures, in American music, art, and pop culture.

 

Students will be evaluated on the basis of class participation on the discussion board, a book report, and on contribution to the collaborative class project. There are no formal exams in this course. Spaces fill up. Enroll today!

 

Dr. Herbert is a practicing attorney in the Seattle area. She has taught history and law as an adjunct instructor for a number of years. She is excited about being a part of the faculty on the BCC campus, and is reputed for using a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to teaching. She looks forward to lively online discussions with her class.
