BTS 165 is a comprehensive course that explores essential concepts of spreadsheet software and covers the Microsoft® Excel 2007 software program from beginning to advanced concepts. Students are prepared to use the major productivity tools found in Excel 2007 in a business environment. Instruction on how to use email and specific Internet sources is included.

Expect to spend several hours each day completing the assigned work. For a total of about 15 - 20 hours per week. Becoming proficient in Excel is achieved by practice. The assignments are designed to give you maximum opportunity to practice using Excel. By the end of this class the students will able to apply the skills and concepts introduced in this class without assistance. The only way this can be achieved is through practice.

Course Prerequisites

BTS 165 is an intensive, fast-paced course that is taught with the assumption that you have acquired basic computer knowledge and experience using Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 or XP in at least one of the following:

  • Successful completion of an introductory computer course such as BTS 161
  • Equivalent computer experience that you have acquired on your own.

FOUNDATION SKILLS

It is expected that students will have these skills when they enroll in the course. The student will need basic knowledge of the following concepts as they apply to spreadsheet design:

  • Creating folders and files in Windows and a working knowledge of file management.
  • Windows standard operating system commands – Save, Save As, Print, Close, Open and Launch programs, handling multiple files, Copy, Cut and Paste.
  • Use arithmetic and logical operators and understand and apply order of operations in calculations
  • Know-how to calculate percentages, mark-ups, mark-downs, commissions, taxes etc

LEARNER PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Learner Program Outcomes are generalized computer, and skills covered in this course. Skills that you may have already mastered if you have computer experience.

  • Plan, create, and format a variety of complex business documents
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate with e-mail
  • Use the Internet, college resources, and industry assessment tests to identify and acquire necessary employment skills
  • Recognize and handle common printer, disk, software, Internet provider, and computer problems.

  • Modify worksheets columns, rows, cells, cell ranges, worksheets and worksheet groups.
  • Edit worksheets by cutting, copying, inserting, and moving text, values, and formulas

  • Use Excel’s tools to check spelling and find & replace data and formats
  • Use AutoFill for text, series, values, formats, formulas, and functions

  • Use basic date & time, logical, lookup, mathematical, and statistical functions
  • Use relative, absolute, and mixed references in formulas and functions

  • Nest multiple formulas and functions to create advanced calculations
  • Link worksheets and workbooks with formulas and functions
  • Group and ungroup worksheet
  • Use existing or create templates to create business forms and documents
  • Create and edit appropriate charts and graphs from worksheet data
  • Use draw feature to create and modify objects and 3D shapes
