Instructional Pluralism Committee

Purpose: In collaboration with Educational Services Cabinet, Curriculum Advisory Committee, and Teaching and Learning Council, identify issues and formulate recommendations pertaining to diversity in instructional program and course content and delivery, organization and governance, and in hiring and assignment of full- and part-time faculty. Develop and maintain a plan to address issues pertaining to diversity within the instructional curriculum and organizational units.

Tasks: Develop and regularly update plan for addressing issues pertaining to diversity within the curriculum and instructional units. Provide recommendations for increasing diversity of full- and part-time faculty. Provide recommendations for increasing diversity components in courses and programs across the curriculum. Provide recommendations for incorporating diversity components within the general education competencies of college curriculum. Provide recommendations related to diversity issues pertaining to the delivery on instruction across the college. Provide recommendations related to diversity issues pertaining to faculty participation in college organization and governance.

Goals:

  • Develop and implement Ethnic and Cultural Studies Program
  • Establish Cultural Traditions competency as core Gen Ed requirement
  • Identify best practices among faculty who include pluralism in their courses
  • Survey faculty to see what classes that they are already teaching could be housed in an E&C Program and what courses they would like to develop for such a program
  • Define pluralism focus for a cross-campus reading

Curriculum Development

  • Develop grants to help faculty conceptualize and develop curricular pedagogical innovations related to pluralism
  • Survey both community colleges and 4-year institutions for best practices related to pluralism
  • Identify Service Learning course and program components related to pluralism and disseminate results
  • Instructional Delivery
  • Identify issues related to pluralism in the delivery of instruction across the College
  • Identify best practices among faculty in instructional delivery related to pluralism issues and disseminate results of survey
  • Use Faculty Resource Center for assistance in curriculum methodology development
  • Investigate issues of access for all students

Extra Curricular Events and Activities

  • Define pluralism focus for Scholar-in-Residence Program
  • Develop faculty exchange program with pluralism focus
  • Develop additional campus events related to pluralism, e.g. Distinguished Lecture Series, Faculty Seminars

Workplace Issues

  • Recommend and help develop training for program chairs in recruitment of part-time faculty
  • Recommend ways to ensure diverse hiring committees
  • Form a small cadre of faculty to work with HR to ensure that processes are followed with regard to diversity
  • Develop an ongoing procedure for regular professional development regarding retention of diverse faculty
  • Provide recommendations related to pluralism issues pertaining to faculty participation in college and governance

Community Partnerships

  • Develop a program supporting faculty visits and activities in the area K-12 schools
  • Develop a mentoring program for faculty
  • Develop community consultants and speakers program
