Student Pluralism Committee

Student Pluralism CommitteeThis committee provides advice and counsel to the Dean of Student Services. The Committee will assist in the development of a work plan for recruitment and retention of students from diverse populations; address issues related to pluralism and diversity; will identify disability issues which need to be addressed; and will build college community support for diversity initiatives.

2005—2006 Tasks:

  • To gather, analyze and use student retention data.
    • Conduct three more student focus groups in addition to the six done last year: Students with Disabilities, GLBT and International Students about campus climate.
  • To increase the number of students in pluralism initiative training and activities.
    • Offer for credit quarterly weekend class, Race in America, an introduction to Courageous Conversations on Race, Racism and Whiteness.
    • Facilitate weekly Courageous Conversations for Students.
  • To increase indigenous student of color participation in Associated Student Government leadership.
  • To develop a welcome packet for Developmental Students in English.

Tasks:

  • Develop cohort by tracking students who attended MCS Jump Start Program Summer 2002
  • Look into setting up a Mentor Program combined with the Alumni efforts
  • Hold a focus group for instructors in a nonattributable environment to identify issues and true feelings about pluralism issues
  • Make self-standing large posters of Compact with hundreds of signatures on it to place prominently throughout the campus
  • Make request of the Foundation to develop a “start-up” loan fund to support target populations
  • Strengthen advising for target populations
  • Develop intervention strategies (start with academic standard policy)
  • Market Degree Audit to students already enrolled as a way to stay on track
  • Identify class capacity issues relating to physical access and students with disabilities
  • Look into priority registration for students from target populations
  • Establish a committee to review and advise on physical access issues
