Chemistry Placement Exam

The Chemistry Placement Exam is for students who plan on taking CHEM& 161 but have not completed CHEM& 121. CHEM& 139, or CHEM& 140 with a C or better from a college/ university. If you have taken these pre-requisite courses then please request an online pre-requisite check to get the chemistry pre-req cleared.

Testing Policy

  • This is a computerized, multiple choice exam.
  • The exam is timed. You are given 60 minutes to complete 40 questions. Each question is worth one point.
  • You need a score of 60% (24 out of 40 points) to pass the Chemistry Placement Exam.
  • The results are valid for one year.
  • You can take the exam up to two times a quarter (one retake for no additional fee).
  • If you need to retest, you must wait at least one week from the date of your first attempt.
  • If you take it twice and still do not pass, you will need to wait until the new quarter to take it again.

Test Fee

  • The test fee is $21.50.
  • You pay the fee at the Testing Services on the day of the test. We only accept check, credit or debit card for payment. If you must pay cash, you will need to go to the cashier's office in the B building after you have checked in for the test.
  • Bring your payment on your test day unless you are retaking the exam in the same quarter. 
  • The test fee is non-refundable.

How to take the Chemistry Placement Exam

Pre-registration is not required. Here are the steps for taking the exam:

1. View the available test sessions on the test schedule above and select a day and time.

2. Go to Testing Services in L100 on the day you have selected with your photo ID, BC SID, and payment. We can only accept check, debit or credit card at our office.

3. Take the exam and then pick up your results upon completion.


  • You must arrive on time for the session you want to test. You will not be admitted to the test room if you arrive late.
  • Allow one hour and 30 minutes to complete the exam (including the time for checking in and out).
  • Due to limited seat availability, examinees are accepted on a first come first serve basis.
  • Calculator is allowed, but no notes or cell phone.
  • Scratch paper and pencil will be provided by the testing center.
  • Recording the exam or reproducing it is strictly prohibited.
  • No bags or back packs are allowed in the testing room. Lockers are available if you need to store your personal items.
  • No drinks (except for bottled water) or food in the testing room.
  • No hats, coats or jackets that have¬†pockets are allowed in the testing room.
  • No breaks are allowed during the test.
  • Cell phone and all other electronic devices are prohibited in the test room.

Inclement Weather and Emergency

Check the college homepage for campus closure due to inclement weather or emergencies. If the college campus is closed, no test will be available. If conditions are dangerous, do not attempt to travel to the test center.
