Coalition for Race and Gender Equity

Close

October 28, 2014 4:00 pm

A couple of years ago, following a Professional Development Day panel discussing the intersections of racism and sexism experienced by women of Color at BC, several women across campus were inspired to form the group Building Bridges: Alliances between Women of Color and White Women to address the ways in which women can better support each other at our college.  This year, we are taking on a new name - Coalition for Race and Gender Equity (CRGE) - and we are seeking others to join us in action with the hopes of moving Bellevue College forward toward achieving greater racial and gender equity.  During Fall quarter, CRGE will brainstorm action items as a large group and identify themes to focus on this academic year.  Also,  learn what is planned for winter and spring quarters.

Our first gathering will be on Tuesday, October 28th from 2:30-4:00 in the LMC (D106).  Please join us with your ideas and potential action items that you hope to begin employing in our efforts toward moving forward and dismantling institutionalized racism and sexism at BC.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

English Dept. Info Session - Accelerated Learning Program

Close

November 18, 2014 3:00 pm

Since Winter 2013, the English Department has been providing students accelerated composition and reading classes via the Accelerated Learning Program. The Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) is a ten credit, English 101 and 092/093, two-hour class where students, who have pre-college composition and reading placement, enroll in both our college-level and pre-college composition courses simultaneously. The English 092/093 component, which has an enrollment cap of ten students, is a review/preparation hour where the instructor provides support for the student's 101 class. The ALP fosters success by relying on a high challenge/high support learning environment, and incorporates resources from Student Support Services, and the Reading and Writing Lab.

Come to our one hour information session on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and learn about the following:

  • The rationale and success of ALP nationally
  • Brief history of ALP in the English Department at Bellevue College
  • How ALP works: organization and instructional approach
  • Success rates: data of students' grades, retention and completion
  • Voices: testimonies from instructors, students, and Student Support Services representatives (TRIO, MCS)
  • Upcoming projects for ALP - Piloting Microsoft Surface Pros with Russ Beard, Vice President of Information Resources
  • Upcoming training and workshops for current and future ALP instructors, and anyone interested
  • Upcoming brown bag sessions for staff and faculty
  • Q & A

All are welcome! In addition to learning about ALP in the English Department, come explore some methods (experiential) used in the support section that may be applicable for your students both in and out of the classroom.

See you there!

History Speaker Series - "Domination, Integration, Betrayal: 1914 and the Long Nineteenth Century"

Close

November 20, 2014 12:20 pm

Everyone welcome!

The war that began in 1914 signaled the terminal phase in the crisis of the European old regime - a crisis that had begun more than a century before. Pursuing the story of this crisis across themes of domination, integration, and betrayal, Raymond Jonas will consider the great power rivalries that underpinned the war, and the bleak, geopolitical thinking that informed them.
