The History Department invites the campus community to the second talk of 2015 in our History Speaker series, which will take place on Thursday, March 5 from 11:30am to 12:20pm in D-106.  Our speaker is Dr. Bob Doan, who has been teaching history at Bellevue College for the past 10 years.

Despite often describing its arenas as "fields" and "parks", baseball began in America's biggest cities, and it emerged just as the U.S. was becoming an industrial and urban society.  Its transition from an amateur to professional game occurred in the decades after the Civil War, the period of America's most rapid industrialization and urbanization.  Thus, through the 1920s (and beyond), it often reflected and embodied key aspects of U.S. urban/industrial society: the rise of corporations, labor unions and strife, immigration/assimilation, the growth of consumerism, and entertainment as business.  All these aspects of the 'national game' will be explored in this talk.
