Case Studies

 

These case studies are for Life Sciences instructors at the Community College and High School level. Each Case Study includes 2 to 3 hours of introductory level, hands-on activities for easy integration. Minimal software is required (Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Access) as the activities are all accessible online. Students need a basic understanding of:

 

  • Molecular biology
  • Phylogeny
  • Biochemistry
  • Computer/Internet navigation skills

 

The case studies can be downloaded in entirety, or by content area as zipped folders with all the necessary files included.

Bioinformatics Programming Case Study (.zip)
Students will create small Perl programs to accomplish bioinformatics tasks. The student will also design a database to analyze sequence data from a biotechnology company.  Instructor materials are included in the Bioinformatics Programming Case Studies Overview.  Case study can be completed in six hour-long classroom sessions.

Bioinformatics Tools Case Study (.zip)
Students use publicly available databases and tools to analyze bioinformatics data. Instructor materials are included in the Bioinformatics Tools Case Studies Overview.  Case study can be completed in four hour-long classroom sessions.

BioStatistics Case Study (.zip)
Students will create statistical programs to accomplish informatics tasks within Excel spreadsheets. The students will then use the skills to statistically analyze clinical trial data from an existing study.  Instructor materials are included in the Computational Skills Overview as a PowerPoint or PDF file.  Case study can be completed in five two hour-long classroom sessions.

Clinical Trials Case Study (.zip)
Students use a Drug Trial SQL database to analyze data from a peritoneal dialysis clinical trial.  Instructor materials are included in the Clinical Trials Data Management Overview.  Case study can be completed in two hour-long classroom sessions.

Medical Informatics Case Study (.zip)
Students use Microsoft Access database to analyze data from a health care provider and an ambulance company. Instructor materials are included in the MEDIT Overview.  Case study can be completed in four hour-long classroom sessions.
