English and Math Testing for College Credit Students

For information on Placement Test dates for students in the English language program, please see “Important Dates” under Intensive English (ESL) Program.

All BC credit-level students are required to take a placement test prior to registering for English or Math classes unless students transfer these courses in from another school.
Please note:TOEFL or IELTS scores are only used for admission to BC and do not guarantee automatic placement into college English classes. If you are eligible for automatic placement into English classes, you will be notified by admissions.

To Take the English and/or Math Test(s):

  • Step 1: No appointment is needed, but each test takes approximately one hour.  You can take both tests at the same time or at different times. See Placement and Testing Services for testing schedules.
  • Step 2: Bring photo ID to the Testing Services in B142.
  • Step 3: A Testing Services employee will discuss your test options with you. Once you have decided on which test(s) you will take, you will sit down at a computer and take the test. Immediately upon finishing the test, you will receive your test results. These results will tell you what classes you can take.

English Placement Test

Your English results are valid for 2 years.

If you place into English 071-074 or English 093 and feel that you should be in a higher level, you may retake the placement test. For more information about Bellevue College testing policies and process see Information About Placement Tests.

Math Placement Test

Your Math results are valid for 1 year. You must take and pass a math course during this time. If you do not, you will need to take the placement test again.

You may take the math test more than once, but after your first test, you must use the ALEKS practice modules before retaking the test. You cannot bring your own calculator to the test, but the Office of Testing Services can provide you with one.
