THE COLLEGE
Bellevue Community College is located about ten miles east of Seattle, Washington, between Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountain foothills. The college is the third largest institution of higher education and enrolls more than 21,000 credit students (7,500 FTEs) annually. BCC has been acknowledged nationally for its leadership with major grants from the National Science Foundation and in winning such awards as the national Sen. Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization from The Association of International Educators and numerous awards for its pioneering work in diversity. POSITION DESCRIPTION
This is a full-time, tenure tack faculty position at Bellevue Community College (BCC) beginning Fall 2008. The successful candidate will teach and monitor student success in first- and second – year Asian language courses, specifically Chinese (Mandarin) and/or Japanese. A typical teaching load is three five-credit courses per quarter, plus at least five office hours per week; the World Languages department offers both day and evening classes. Non-teaching duties include student advising, on-going professional development, and college governance at all levels. Departmental governance includes providing leadership for BCC’s Asian language offerings, and assistance with course scheduling, curriculum development and review, and instructional technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree
- Native or near-native proficiency in the Chinese Mandarin and/or Japanese language, both spoken and written.
- Two years teaching experience.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of all students, including those with physical and learning disabilities and those from differing socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
- Demonstrated commitment to pluralism and multiculturalism in pedagogy and interpersonal/collegial relations
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Master degree in Chinese or Japanese or both.
- Successful community college teaching experience in World Languages.
- A philosophy of education appropriate to the needs of BCC’s diverse student body and community colleges in general.
- Ability to design and assess outcome-based curricula and/or experience in developing material to be used in a digital language.
- Experience in assessing student proficiency for placement in the appropriate level language class.
- Experience with innovative teaching and learning strategies, including effective use of language labs and other instructional technology.
- Proven leadership ability and demonstrated ability to work as a departmental team member.
- Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience living in a country where Chinese or Japanese language is spoken.
- Experience participating in or facilitating an effective study abroad program.
- Demonstrated ability to form relationships in Asia or demonstrated commitment to global awareness/studies.
- Demonstrated ability to teach in a multi-cultural, multi-ability classroom and advocate for pluralism.
- Demonstrated understanding of concepts related to teaching and learning theory, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes.
EMPLOYMENT DATE: Fall Quarter 2008 (September 2008)
STARTING SALARY: Faculty Salary Schedule (based on a 174-day contract). Beginning salary will be determined by assessment of education and related experience.
Full-time faculty must become members of the Bellevue Community College Association of Higher Education union, or pay a representation fee to the Association, within 30 calendar days after date of hire.
