THE COLLEGE
Bellevue Community College is located about ten miles east of Seattle, Washington, between Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountain foothills. The college is the third largest institution of higher education and enrolls more than 21,000 credit students (7,500 FTEs) annually. BCC has been acknowledged nationally for its leadership with major grants from the National Science Foundation and in winning such awards as the national Sen. Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization from The Association of International Educators and numerous awards for its pioneering work in diversity. POSITION DESCRIPTION
English faculty teach writing and reading at all levels. In addition, the department offers several literature selections each quarter, which are assigned on a rotating basis and include world literature and other "non-canonical" options. A typical teaching load is three five-credit courses plus at least five office hours per week. Non-teaching duties include reading placement essays, advising students, participating in curriculum development and review, and serving on college governance committees at all levels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master of Arts or higher degree in English, Rhetoric/Composition, or other related field.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to teach college level composition and developmental reading and writing to both native and non-native speakers with equal commitment and success.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of all students, including those with physical and learning disabilities and those from differing socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrated commitment to pluralism and multiculturalism in pedagogy and interpersonal/collegial relations.
- Demonstrated interest in and experience with integrating reading and writing at the developmental level.
- Relevant background and/or skills that will enhance the English Department and distinguish you among other applicants.
- Experience or preparation in two of the following areas:
* Program/department leadership and governance
* Technical writing
* Literature and/or Learning Communities
* Curriculum development and/or learning assessment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated ability to teach in a multicultural, multi-ability classroom and advocate for pluralism.
- Demonstrated understanding of concepts related to teaching and learning theory, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes.
EMPLOYMENT DATE: Fall Quarter 2008 (September 2008)
STARTING SALARY: Faculty Salary Schedule (based on a 174-day contract). Beginning salary will be determined by assessment of education and related experience.
Full-time faculty must become members of the Bellevue Community College Association of Higher Education union, or pay a representation fee to the Association, within 30 calendar days after date of hire.
