EXEMPT, FULL-TIME 

DEPARTMENT:           CAMPUS OPERATIONS/PUBLIC SAFETY

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position reports to the Director of Campus Operations and has responsibility for 24-hour coverage of campus security, emergency preparedness, safety operations, college traffic and parking, crime prevention, security/safety training, alarm/security systems, and assuring compliance with current laws and regulations as they pertain to the functions and activities of the campus Public Safety Department. The Director of Public Safety is responsible for campus safety and security and acts as campus safety officer.  Provide leadership and direction for the public safety department in its day to day operations.  Oversee the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, evaluation of the assistant public safety director, officers and office staff supporting the public safety department, act as liaison between the college and other public entities, manages the department budget and serves on the campus safety committee and others as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field OR three (3) years supervisory experience in a law-enforcement role.
  • Five (5) years experience in a law-enforcement related position.
  • Valid motor vehicle Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current knowledge of environmental design for crime prevention and electronic security measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, write and implement policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laws applicable to higher education, including but not limited to, FERPA, ADA, Campus Safety Act, et al.
  • Experience in working with a unionized work force.
  • Current knowledge of environmental design for crime prevention and electronic measures.
  • Experience working on a college or university campus.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying rules, laws and statutes.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff and faculty of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds and abilities and a commitment to a culturally diverse environment

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervising, planning and direction of campus safety and emergency planning programs.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise the activities of the public safety and parking personnel in their efforts to maintain a safe, secure, and orderly educational working environment.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure effective security coverage at all BCC activities and events.
  • Develop and implement crime prevention programs as needed.
  • Develop and implement necessary security/safety training for campus personnel.
  • Develop and implement an ongoing staff training program.
  • Establish a policy and procedures manual, as well as performance standards for the department.
  • Establish a reporting mechanism and recordkeeping that complies with state and federal records requirements and all administrative needs.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the college emergency preparedness process, and coordinate all appropriate training as required.
  • Manage the parking and parking enforcement on campus.
  • Ensure safety and emergency equipment and materials in working order and meet current applicable city, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Serves as chair of the campus safety committee and serves on others as required.

SALARY:

The salary range is $59,277 - $71,133 with placement based on education and related experience.
