TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION PROGRAM

For over ten years the Translation & Interpretation Institute at Bellevue Community College has been the leader in training for aspiring and practicing translators and interpreters in the Pacific Northwest. Housed in the Continuing Education division at BCC’s North Campus, the self-support program offers a 24-credit Certificate in translation and interpreting, workshops, and customized contract training. It also administers the examinations for the Washington State Court Interpreter Certification.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The half-time position of Translation & Interpretation Program Manager reports to the Director of World Languages & Travel and is responsible for all aspects of program management and development, including student and faculty recruitment and support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, training and development, translation or interpreting, or other field relevant to position
  • Work experience in translation, interpreting, localization, or related project management
  • Experience in teaching, training and development, or instructional design
  • Multilingual and multicultural skills
  • Experience in finance and budgeting
  • Proficient in basic MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, and Outlook

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in education, training and development, translation or interpreting, or other field relevant to position
  • Studies and/or certification in translation, interpreting, or localization
  • Experience teaching subjects in translation, interpreting, or localization
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Program management and development experience, preferably in higher education
  • Experience in marketing and student recruitment
  • Proven competency in recruiting, supervising, and evaluating faculty
  • Established relationships with local professional organizations, business and industry
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, staff, advisory committees, and the public
  • Ability to organize and work effectively in a fast-paced environment, both independently, and as part of a small program team, to work under pressure, handle multiple tasks, prioritize and maintain deadlines
  • Focused, results-oriented, and entrepreneurial
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff and faculty of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds and abilities and a commitment to a culturally diverse environment

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate the scheduling, staffing, and evaluation of certificate classes, Continuing Education workshops, and court interpreter certification exams
  • Develop and implement effective faculty and guest speaker recruitment strategy and methods
  • Provide faculty orientation, support, coaching, evaluation, observation, and development
  • Keep up to date with trends and developments in the fields of translation, interpretation, localization, and education, as well as with college policies, procedures, and initiatives
  • Participate, network, and present in local and national industry association meetings and conferences
  • Develop and execute a strategic plan for program expansion and improvement in consultation with the advisory committee and supervisor
  • Field inquiries from prospective students and direct student recruitment, assessment, and outreach
  • Advise and assist students in matters related to college, program, funding, and career options; monitor student progress and success; resolve emerging issues and complaints
  • Promote and market the program and its offerings, and connect with employer and community groups
  • Coordinate the design, review, and implementation of effective curricula based on participatory training methods and current adult learner theory and pedagogy
  • Manage and monitor projects and budgets in self-support environment
  • Expand student and instructional resources and tools
  • Participate in internal and external committees and task forces
  • Maintain advisory committee membership and activities, facilitate its meetings, and act upon its recommendations
  • Build the capacity to acquire and deliver customized contract training services

SALARY

The salary range is 50%of $45,222 - $54,267 with placement based on education and related experience.
