Speakers: Olympic medalist and civil rights champion John Carlos and sportswriter and commentator Dave Zirin
- Carlos, a former track and field athlete and professional football player, was the bronze-medal winner in the 200 meters at the 1968 Summer Olympics when his Black Power salute on the podium caused much political controversy. He went on to tie the world record in the 100 yard dash and beat the 200 meters world record. After his track career, he enjoyed brief stints in the National Football League and Canadian Football League before becoming a founding member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR).
- Named one of UTNE Reader’s “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Our World”, Zirin writes about the politics of sports for the Nation Magazine. Winner of Sport in Society and Northeastern University School of Journalism’s ‘Excellence in Sports Journalism’ Award, Zirin is also the host of Sirius XM Radio’s popular weekly show, Edge of Sports Radio. He also co-hosts the radio program “The Collision: Sports and Politics with Etan Thomas & Dave Zirin.” He also the author of A People’s History of Sports in the United States, part of Howard Zinn’s People’s History Series for the New Press.
