MyBCC upgrade now scheduled for fall 2008

Posted 3/21/08

The college web portal, MyBCC will offer some exciting improvements starting fall quarter 2008. The software powering MyBCC will undergo a major upgrade which will introduce new features such as a powerful search engine, blog and wiki sites for MyBCC Class Sites and other portal sites, a document "recycle bin," and RSS feeds. The upgrade, which was originally scheduled for release in spring 2008 has been delayed slightly to allow the college to make some other critical technology upgrades over the summer that will tie in closely with the portal and its performance.

Last fall quarter, many of you provided us with insight on how we could improve MyBCC. We received over 550 responses to the MyBCC User Feedback Survey and over 50 students and employees participated in focus groups. The most common suggestion from all users was the importance of an effective search engine and making it easier to find sites and content.

Additionally, many students noted a high interest in social networking features such as posting boards for selling used textbooks, easier ways to find contact information for instructors, and easier ways to connect with other BCC students online. We have been working closely with the Associated Student Government (ASG) to prioritize student needs and plan improvements for the portal's fall release. Thank you for your feedback and ideas. Check back in spring 2008 for more details on the MyBCC upgrade project.

New emergency message system now available to students and employees

Posted 10/01/07

BCC students and employees may now sign up to receive emergency alerts using the new BCC Alert System. BCC produced this new resource over the summer after much research and college-wide input over the spring and summer quarters. The highest priority with the new service was to provide a simple method for communicating quickly with the entire campus community in the event of campus emergency.

Since spring 2007, the college has reviewed emergency procedures and gathered input from many students and employees about how to best accomplish this. The new service is now packaged as a feature within the also newly redesigned, Public Safety website which also has some great new information focused on emergency preparedness.

How to start using the alert system

To activate your alerts, just sign in one time using your SID and PIN—that’s it! BCC will automatically set up your BCC e-mail to receive alerts during your first visit. You may also add other personal e-mail addresses or set up your mobile device/phone if it is equipped to receive text messages.

(Tip: A shortcut to the new alert system is also now available in MyBCC eTools for all portal users!)

What You Get

As a subscriber to this service, you’ll receive an e-mail or text message alert any time the college closes unexpectedly, classes are delayed, or during any other emergency conditions that relate to your individual safety or the safety of the campus community. The alert system is used exclusively for “need to know information” and will not be used for any other form of communication.

Parking lot closures expected now through December 2008

Posted 9/19/07

Due to the location of the new S Building construction project and unavoidable scheduling, parking will be affected in parking lots 7 and 10 during fall quarter.

  • Student parking lot 7 will be closed until December 2008.

  • Student parking lot 10 will be closed for the first three weeks of fall quarter 2007.

  • Additional parking is being made available in parking lots 1A, 1B, 3A, 3B, and 5.

See map below for details.

Public Safety would like to encourage the campus community to carpool and/or use public transportation during the first 3 weeks of the quarter if these are feasible options.

Thank you for your patience. We apologize for any inconvenience these closures may cause.

BCC begins construction on new science and technology building

Posted 6/18/07

BCC has received capital funding from the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) for funding a new BCC Science and Technology Building (Building S). Contractors will begin staging the site for this construction work starting on June 19, 2007. On that day, trailers will be placed in Parking Lot F2 next to the KBCS-fm offices.

Construction on this building is scheduled between summer 2007 through late in fall 2008. During this time, the road through lot F2 will be open for access to the student parking garage, the Eastern Washington University offices and KBCS-fm offices.

Site clearing and excavation for the new Building S is scheduled to begin on July 9. On that day the contractor will set up construction fencing and close off the south half of parking lot 7, as well as lots E1, E2 and E3. The 5th floor of the parking garage (which was added recently in preparation of this project) will become an employee only parking area. A sign will be posted stating this change. Parking lot 7 will also be re-opened when construction concludes.

Several other smaller-scale projects will begin an initial planning phase during summer 2007. There may be other space moves associated with these projects.

More details will be posted on the BCC Announcements page if they affect students and the general public. We will work diligently to keep any disruption of campus activities and operations at a minimum. Thank you for your patience while we make improvements to the campus.

BCC URL changes to www.bellevuecollege.edu

Posted 2/12/07

Starting this month, the college's official web address will change from www.bcc.ctc.edu to www.bellevuecollege.edu. One of the driving factors for BCC making this change is to provide a more user-friendly, intuitive and memorable address for people trying to locate the college on the Web.

Although the new URL is already being advertised to the public in several print publications, many departments may require several months to make this transition fully.  In the next few weeks, an automatic redirect from the previous URL will go into effect.

If you have established personal bookmarks to any BCC site containing www.bcc.ctc.edu, you may update this information to www.bellevuecollege.edu whenever it is convenient for you.
