BCC President Jean Floten
awarded honorary doctorate

 

BELLEVUE, WASH.– Bellevue Community College President Jean Floten has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree by Bellevue-based City University.

 

Awarded in recognition of Floten’s life-time achievements in service to higher education and the community, the degree was presented by City University President Lee Gorsuch during June 17 commencement ceremonies in Seattle.

 

Floten, who joined Bellevue Community College as president in 1989, is widely recognized for developing the college into an innovative, nationally-acclaimed institution.

 

She is often called upon to speak throughout the state and nation on technology education, college programs, higher education funding and other major issues affecting community colleges.

 

Floten’s most recent awards include the 2005 Association of Community College Trustees National Equity Award and selection as one of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2005 Women of Influence.

 

Floten serves on the Educational Testing Service national advisory board, the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Key Bank Advisory Board.

 

She earned Master of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Portland State University.

 

Founded in Seattle and headquartered in Bellevue, City University is one of the Northwest's largest, private, not-for-profit universities. City University offers instruction in nearly twenty locations in Washington state and Hawaii, the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, and Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Romania, Slovakia, China and Mexico.

 

Serving 35,000 students annually, Bellevue Community College is the third largest institution of higher learning in Washington state.
