Dr. James Bennett named
Vice President for Equity & Pluralism

BELLEVUE, WASH.– Dr. James Bennett, a resident of the Greenwood/Phinney Ridge neighborhood in Seattle, has been named the first Vice President for Equity and Pluralism at Bellevue Community College (BCC).

 

In this role Dr. Bennett will lead the development and implementation of programs to promote diversity and intercultural understanding at BCC.

 

Dr. Bennett has worked at BCC since 1978, when he joined the college as a counselor in the Minority Affairs Program and an instructor in English-as-a-Second Language and Language Arts. Since 1990 he has been serving as Dean of Instruction.

 

Prior to joining BCC Dr. Bennett held various teaching and administrative posts at Macalester College, Metropolitan State University and Metropolitan Community College in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.

 

Dr. Bennett earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration the University of Washington in 1988 and holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Mankato State University and Macalester College, respectively.

 

Active in state-wide educational planning, Dr. Bennett has served as chairman of two task forces on developmental education and as a member of the Washington Vocational Technical Council and the Joint Committee on Assessment.

 

Dr. Bennett is currently president-elect of the National Council on Black American Affairs board of directors, a member of the board of the Western Region Council on Black American Affairs, a member of the United Way of King County Employment Impact Council, and active in Lake City Rotary and the North Seattle Boys and Girls Club.
