Employees

  1. Provide more training opportunities: supplement current Let’s Talk About Race, Beyond Diversity, and Courageous Conversations about Race with other options for deepening and sustaining the dialogue on race and other issues of inclusion.

    Timeline
    • Fall 2007: Agree on initial mandatory training needs for administrators, exempt staff, and program chairs
    • February 2008: Continue consultation and decide on additional training needs/methodologies for winter quarter
    • Mid-winter to mid-spring term 2008: Conduct training
    • May 2008: Evaluate 2007-2008 training and plan training for 2008-2009
    • Responsible: Vice President Equity and Pluralism (VPEP) and Vice President of Human Resources (VPHR)
  2. Review and revise, as needed, hiring procedures and complaint and grievance procedures.

    Timeline
    • Fall 2007: VPEP/VPHR initiate planning to review hiring procedures, in consultation with Employee Pluralism Committee, including proposed revisions to Interim and Temporary Hiring Procedures
    • Winter 2008: Complete review of both hiring procedures and complaint processes
    • Spring 2008: All College Council review/approval of any recommended policy revisions
    • Spring 2008: President’s Staff deliberations on/approval of any changes in hiring procedures
    • Responsible: VPEP/VPHR in collaboration with Ombudsperson, Vice President of Student Services, Executive Dean of Instruction, and Vice President of Administrative Services
  3. Initiate Diversity Scorecard to assess institutional accountability to (a) the values of Pluralism and (b) the college’s efforts to practice greater inclusion and diversity among both students and employees.

    Timeline
    • Fall 2007: Build upon the Initial Database, clarified and confirmed last year: begin by applying diversity scorecard procedures to available student databases.
    • Fall 2007: Identify Evidence Team required for Diversity Scorecard processes
    • Winter 2008: Begin identification of specific elements to assess relative to students
    • Winter 2008: Work with VP of Human and Dean of Information Resources to identify and integrate appropriate employee databases into Diversity Scorecard procedures
    • Spring 2008: Complete assessment of selected student variables, share results, and identify next set of student-related variables for continued assessment for 2008-2009
    • Spring 2008: Introduce employee variables to Evidence Team
    • Responsible: VPEP in extensive collaboration with VPHR/DIR

Students

  1. Provide opportunities for students to receive pluralism education and training.

    Timeline
    • Summer 2007-Academic Year 2008: VPEP becomes actively involved in student leadership-development activities. Includes (a) speaking at and facilitating leadership-development retreats/activities and weekly scheduled meetings with Associated Student Government Vice President (ASG VP) for Pluralism and Student Affairs; and (b) assisting the ASG VP for Pluralism and Student Affairs with the development of a Pluralism work plan.
    • Fall 2007: Fully integrate ASG and other student leaders into the Student Pluralism Committee (examples provided under individual committee work plans)
    • Fall 2007: Acquaint students with Bias Incident Response and Support Team (BIRST) protocols; begins during Freshman Year Experience and is ongoing.
    • Responsible: VPEP in collaboration with ASG VP for Pluralism and Student Affairs, Student Pluralism Committee, and Dean of Student Services.

Instruction

  1. Review curriculum to enhance pluralism education and training opportunities.

    Timeline
    • Fall 2007: Consult with Executive Dean and Instructional Pluralism Committee (IPC) to determine appropriate activities to achieve goal. Establish a regularly scheduled meeting with Executive Dean; support and assist the marketing of IPC work plan
    • Begin Fall 2007: Develop pilot by Spring 2008: Work with Executive Dean, MCS staff, Dean of Students, and Director of Center for Liberal Arts to explore/develop linked-course concept as a way to improve academic success for students of color
    • Responsible: VPEP in collaboration with Executive Dean, IPC staff, Dean of Students, and CLA Director.

Administration

  1. Implement Community Pluralism Advisory Committee.

    Timeline
    • Meetings scheduled for year. Plan Outline follows:
    • Identify and communicate to potential members
    • Hold meetings; clarify roles and responsibilities
    • Plan annual agenda
    • Responsible: VPEP
  2. Develop and communicate a concrete and commonly held Vision for Pluralism at BCC.

    Timeline
    • Winter 2008: Launch Equity and Pluralism Website
    • Responsible: VPEP
  3. Strengthen the formal Pluralism organization and establish quarterly meeting schedules for the Pluralism Steering Committee and President’s Staff .

    Timeline
    • July 2007: Successful Pluralism Steering Committee Retreat
    • Summer 2007: Regular meeting schedule established and meeting with President’s Staff scheduled for Fall 2007
    • Academic Year 2007-2008: Work collaboratively with new pluralism committee leadership to establish expectations and comfortable working relationships; revise and update the committee descriptions and committee revisions completed Summer 2007
    • Responsible: VPEP, Pluralism Steering Committee, and President’s Staff
