In August of 2011, the Post 9/11 GI-Bill changed in several ways.

Post 9/11 GI-Bill Changes

  • Loss of interval pay, including BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) for veterans attending college during summer months.

One of the most significant changes has to do with the loss of interval pay, including BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) for veterans attending college.

BAH is an allowance provided to veterans/dependents (that are eligible for Post 9-11) attending college to pay for housing.

While attending Bellevue College full time, he/she will receive $1452 per month as of January 1, 2012. (Some may receive more depending on when they started their Post 9-11 benefits.)

But the BAH only applies for months the student veteran is in school. Here are details from the Post 9/11 GI-Bill information page:

Beginning August 1, 2011, break (or interval pay) will no longer be payable under MGIB if your Fall term ends on December 15th and your Winter term begins January 3rd, your January housing allowance will cover 15 days in December and your February housing allowance will cover 28 days in January.

If you don’t attend summer school, here are the approximate housing allowances you will receive this summer.

Month Amount
June $726
July $0
August $0
September $580
October $1452
November $1452

Your last full BAH payment is in June will be paid in the rears in the month of July), , the next, October (for September). In this example above, this veteran would be receiving a total of $1306.00 from July through October. Even veterans who carefully manage their money will have difficulty stretching this across the long summer break!

So you might need a summer job. If you do, you should start looking NOW. And if you do, Project Succeed can help.
