What does it mean for food to be sustainable?

Sustainable foods encompass many different topics including

  • Organic
  • Local Food systems
  • Fair-Trade
  • Personal Health
  • Agriculture
  • Ecologically and ethically responsible
  • Humane treatment of animals
  • Eliminating harmful chemicals & pesticides

How is Bellevue College getting involved with sustainable foods?

Bellevue College’s Sustainable Foods Group (SFG) is a student, faculty, and staff group committed to making food at Bellevue College more sustainable.

On September 24th, SFG helped host a Nourishing Networks meeting on campus. Bellevue Nourishing Networks is a nonprofit which seeks to gather leaders in the Bellevue community to address issues of hunger. Participants include representatives from social service organizations, teachers, principals. Additionally, it serves as a resource for non-profits addressing homelessness, youth engagement, and other community members at large. These groups collaborate and strategize methods for serving people who are hungry in our community.

Bellevue College’s connection with Nourishing Networks marks a new phase in the institution’s commitment to serving students. As the College tries to provide hungry students with basic needs, reaching out to representatives and resources in the community is a method for expanding its reach.

The Sustainable Foods Group at Bellevue College is a great way to get connected on campus and to help make an impact on campus and in the community.

For more information on how to get involved or if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact the Sustainable Foods Coordinator, Osha Morningstar at osha.morningstar@bellevuecollege.edu.
