Consider Sustainability this Winter

As Fall midterms finish up, many students are getting closer to their registration for classes this winter. Many friends and fellow classmates of mine are still trying to find out what they want to pursue, others thought they knew but found themselves digging deeper into majors and programs they aren’t passionate about. The tough economy and increasingly competitive job market have students pondering what careers are going to give them the most payback both financially and emotionally.

Over the last several years, increased efforts by both corporations and individuals to push more efficient and less wasteful practices have launched a nationwide effort to transform our current social infrastructure to one of more sustainable nature. Sustainability development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of our future generations to meet their own needs.” As consumers demand more socially- responsible business models, many organizations have addressed protecting the environment as fundamental to their vision. Career-wise, sustainability is an area of expertise many companies lack in, therefore having thorough knowledge of sustainable solutions will be valuable in the future.

Much of our cultures current consumption habits are not resourceful, wasting away scarce and limited natural resources. All across the board, our wasteful systems are straining the natural environment around us. Sustainability developments include everything from advocating the use of locally sourced foods, to engineering technologies that harness renewable resources and are less impactful on the environment. Companies and individuals everyday are asking big questions about the future of our planet, and are designing practical solutions that are less environmentally impactful than in the past.

Sustainability concepts can be applied to nearly any industry, and those who choose to participate now are on the brink of a worldwide effort to maintain our planets resources and reverse the environmental crisis that threatens us. Our planet’s well-being is at stake, and the scarcity of resources is increasing every year. The Office of Sustainability and Bellevue College, more than ever needs passionate individuals who are inspired to create change, and to inspire the masses to invest in our movement.
