Internship Opportunities: Washington Environmental Council

washington environmental council logoWashington Environmental Council (WEC) is a nonprofit, statewide advocacy organization that has been driving positive change to solve Washington’s most critical environmental challenges since 1967. WEC builds power for the environmental movement in Washington. Washington Conservation Voters (WCV) is the statewide political voice for the environment. We work to elect environmentally responsible candidates to state and local offices. We advocate for strong environmental policies and we hold our elected officials accountable.

WEC is offering two types of Fall 2015 Internships. A Fall Communications Internship and a Fall Field Internship. See below for more information on each.

2015 Fall Communications Internship

We are looking for an intern to provide communications support and research to our three person communications team. This is a part-time, hands-on, fast-paced internship that will involve critical thinking, office work, and strong writing and communications skills. This is a great position for someone who is invested in protecting and restoring Washington’s environment and excited to gain experience working in strategic communications on issues and political advocacy.

Primary projects and responsibilities will include:
• Tracking email metrics and assisting with testing email strategies to maximize engagement with
our members
• Supporting website redesign project and organizing historical documents
•Conducting research past organizational successes
•Preparing printed materials for advocacy events

Desired qualifications:
• Interest in Washington environmental policy or politics
• Strong writing and research skills
• Strong writing and communication skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite; design skills a plus
• Independent self-starter
• Ability to work well in fast-paced environments and multi-task

Interns will have weekly staff supervision meetings, weekly training opportunities, and networking opportunities. Transportation reimbursements will be available. Interns are asked to commit 10-15 hours/week for 10 weeks (Beginning of October-End of November). Schedule is flexible and may vary weekly.

2015 Fall Field Internship

This is a part-time, hands-on, fast-paced internship that will involve significant on-the ground campaign work in addition to office work. This is a great position for someone who is invested in protecting and restoring Washington’s environment and excited to gain experience working on electoral and advocacy
campaigns.

Primary responsibilities will include:
• Recruit, train and mobilize activists to take action on WCV endorsed candidate campaigns and/or
WEC
environmental and climate advocacy campaigns.
• Coordinate volunteer opportunities and outreach events with the public.
• Assist with online communication (Social media, event postings, etc.)
• Maintain and organize data in organizational databases

Desired qualifications:
• Interest and experience in Washington environmental policy or politics
• Strong history of teamwork
• Independent self-starter
• Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments
• Strong writing and research skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to multi-task
• Bilingual
• Experience in multicultural environments

We are recruiting for three positions. Interns will have weekly staff supervision meetings, weekly training opportunities, and networking opportunities.Transportation reimbursements will be available. Interns are asked to commit 10-15 hours/week for 10 weeks (Beginning of October- End of November). Schedule will vary weekly based on our field opportunities. Interns must be available to work some weeknights and weekends consistently throughout the Fall.
