Bike Events Continue! Ride in the Rain & Brake Maintenance Workshop

Throughout the month of October, Bellevue College has hosted a number of exciting and educational events relating to bike commuting! As part of our campus wide push toward alternative transportation. Single occupancy vehicles are Bellevue College’s biggest contributor to carbon emissions, a problem which can be alleviated by more students transitioning away from their vehicles and considering these cheaper, healthier alternatives.

Bellevue College’s biking program has been heating up, with last May’s big “Bike Month” speakers, seminars, and events being a big hit around campus. Through a partnership with the Cascade Bicycle Club , Bellevue College utilized LUUM Commute Management Software, a program which allows staff and students to log trips and compete with fellow bikers in the community. The competition was a success with BC clocking in more than 300 bike trips for a combined 2,199 miles. This translated to 1,936 lbs. of CO2 avoided. Not only did our team help reduce our campus emissions, in the process they burned a combined 107,783 calories in the process! The interest sparked enough interest to expand the scope of our biking services on campus; so our office has worked hard this Fall to provide our campus with a number of great resources. Next month is “Ride in the Rain” challenge, once again hosted by LUUM & Cascade Bicycle Club. For more information visit our team page linked below!

This month we sought the help of Bikeworks, a Seattle organization whose mission is “Building sustainable communities by educating youth and promoting bicycling” to help our office host some educational workshops. The workshops included:

  • Bike Mobile- You may have noticed the pile of bikes lined up outside of the Student Union earlier this month next to a big bus. The “Bike Mobile” brought the bike shop right to our very own courtyard. Students and faculty were encouraged to bring in their bikes for routine tune ups to get them back on their seats! The best part about it? Tune-ups were absolutlely FREE. We received great feedback from students who were able to get their old, dusty bikes up and running again!
  • Commuting 101- Students learned the rules of the road, gear, map safe routes, bus loading tips and more! Even seasoned bikers found value in this session. An expert from Bikeworks was on-hand answering questions for anyone from amateurs to expert bike-commuters
  • Fix-A-Flat- In the Fix-A-Flat workshop, students and staff had the opportunity to learn some of the most commonly used basic bike tools. Bikeworks provided a number of great tips and lessons on making routine repairs such as changing out a flat tire.
