COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

The primary objective in this course is to improve your ability to communicate with other people.  Several goals are instrumental in achieving this objective:

 

1.     to improve your ability to communicate on a one to one or interpersonal level using quality communication skills derived from an understanding of communication theory.

2.     to improve your ability to analyze a variety of factors that affect and/or affected by the group process.

3.     to improve your ability to research, write, deliver, and analyze public speeches.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
           
1. Define the process of communication, applying the transactional model
           
2. Explain communication competence and identify personal strengths and challenges of specific to   

                one-to-one, small group, and one-to-many settings
           
3. Identify the characteristics of interpersonal relationships and assess methods of language,

                nonverbal, and listening skills
           
4. Identify the characteristics of a group and methods of creating an effective group climate
           
5. Apply critical thinking skills in the research, writing, and analysis of a speech
           
6. Present a well-developed, audience-appropriate speech

EXAMS - will cover material provided in your text and in classroom discussions.  Exams will consist of  true/false and multiple choice questions.  Review sheets will be made available on the class website.

 

PARTICIPATION - Your participation will be evaluated on the basis of attendance (see explanation under policies section), involvement in class discussions, activities, group project, speech critiques, speaking exercises, and any other relevant criteria.

 

GROUP PROJECT - You and six other group members will create a 15 minute presentation that instructs the class on a subject found in the text.  Project topics will be subjects that the class did not explore or covered minimally in previous class

 

SPEECH - (5-7 minutes)  You will inform the audience of new information on a current event.  Library Research and a typed outline are required for this assignment (worth 25 points of the 150 speech grade).

 

GROUP ANALYSIS PAPER  You will write a paper in class analyzing the communication that occurred in your group while completing the group project. 

 

 

 

 

POLICIES

 

 

1.     Late work (including exams and the speech) will not be accepted unless arrangements are made with me before the due date.

 

2.     All major class assignments must be completed in order to receive credit for the class.

 

3.     My goal is to create an environment where all students feel they have an opportunity to learn.

6.   Given the interactive nature of this course, regular class attendance is required.  Students
