Lab Meets: Mondays  & Tuesdays: 2:20-5:20pm, C-157 

Lockers MUST be cleared out by Thursday, August 9 and ALL projects and personal belongings must be removed from the studio by that date as well.

 

Requirements for this course are the completion of four specific, assigned projects, each worth one credit.  In addition, there will be basic exercise-in-technique assignments worth one credit designed to develop dexterity in the handling of clay, specifically handbuilding methods including pinch, coil and slab, and surface treatments including underglaze and slip decoration (261), glaze, and overglaze.  Participation in clay mixing is also required.* Throwing on the wheel is optional and NOT required except for those students enrolled in Art 261, which focuses on developing throwing skills on the wheel**.  Out-of-doors  Raku and primitive smoke/sawdust firing techniques will be the focus of summer quarter.

*for Art 260 students.

**Participation in glaze and engobe mixing is required for 261 students.

 

Week 1

6/25-27

Introduction; discussion and slide presentation for first project; handbuilding technique: pinch; and surface technique: underglazes on 6/25. Handbuilding techniques: coil (6/26) and slab (6/27).  Basic wheel throwing techniques: centering, the ‘cylinder’, shaping, and footing/trimming..  3 sketches due for 1st project on Wednesday, 6/27.

 

Week 2

7/2-3

NO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 4 - HOLIDAY; Discussion and slide presentation of second project, 7/2; RAKU, cone 10,  and low fire glazes discussed as surface techniques this week; wheel throwing: plates and for 261: engobes as surface technique; project #1 should be completed by the end of the week.

 

Week 3

7/9-11

Discussion and slide presentation on third project, & sketches due for 2nd project on Mon., 7/9.  Burnishing demonstrated and primitive firings discussed.  Project #2 should be completed by the end of this week.  RAKU glaze firing on the 9th or 10th, weather permitting during lab.

 

Week 4

7/16-18

Discussion and slide presentation on Robert Arneson; sketches due for 3rd project on Mon., 7/16; discussion of project #4 with sketches due by Wed., 7/18; additional wheel throwing techniques: bottle/spouts shapes covered during lab; load gas kiln for cone 10 firing on Mon.,16th and fire off on Tues., 17th.  Project #3 should be completed by the end of this week.

 

Week 5

7/23-25

Absolute last day for sketches for Project #4/Final Project on Mon., 7/23; additional wheel throwing techniques: sectional forms during lab; surface techniques utilizing overglazes.  Unload cone 10 gas kiln on Monday, 23rd.  Project #4 should be completed by the end of this week.  FINAL bisque for cone 10 gas firing on Wed, 27th.

 

Week 6

7/30-8/1

Monday,1st absolute last day for working with wet clay.  All remaining projects MUST be dry and ready for bisque firing by Wed., 3rd , this includes bisque for all  glaze firings.

 

Week 7

8/6-9

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Load final cone 10 gas firing on Mon., 8/6 and fire off on Tues., 8h; Unload cone 10 gas kiln on Thurs, 9th; last low fire glaze firings on Tuesday, 7h; Raku and primitive firings on Tuesday, 7th; Attendance MANDATORY for FINAL group critique and grading on Thursday.,9th.  Studio and locker clean-out/clean-up.  Have a great rest of summer!
