DR215,
Section A – Scene Design
Spring 2008
Instructor:
E 121 / 425-564-2416 / Office Hours by Appointment
DR115 is not a lecture class; it is a Studio Design
class. By this I mean to say that the
most important aspect in the success of DR115 is your willingness to share your thoughts with each other. The goal this quarter is to provide
experience with the basic tools of the tangible design. I say tangible, because certainly the most
dynamic tool is your imagination.
Students will research, draw, build and present their own design
concepts to the class. The class will
share honest and USEFUL criticism
from which the designer may choose to act.
I say choose, because every designer has the right to defend his/her
concepts; remembering however, that the responsibility is not just to create an
engaging environment, but one which can be understood by the uninformed
spectator. (If your design requires a
footnote, chances are very good that it needs to be revised.)
This quarter we will be
designing The Tempest, by William Shakespeare.
Two copies will be available for short loan in the BCC Library. Every student is expected to read the play at
least twice throughout the quarter.
This will ensure that you are prepared to discuss and explicate the structure
and concepts of the piece.
You will find I am very
approachable and completely informal in my teaching style; however, I cannot
tolerate unexcused absences from my class. If you must miss, I expect notice prior to
11am the day of class. This may be an
email, phone call or visit to my office.
A failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence, and I assure
you, just three unexcused absences will
likely result in a failing letter grade.
