I. Purpose:

 

A.     To write.

B.     To evaluate your ability to write an out-of-class essay.

 

II. Essay Assignment:  Choose one of the topics below:

 

A.     Someone I Admire: What person do you especially admire? It might be a family member, a friend, a co-worker. It should be someone you know fairly well so that you’ll be able to give plenty of specific details. After giving it some thought and selecting a person, choose three characteristics of that person that seem most important, and write your paper.

 

B.     A Place I’ll Never Forget: What place means more to you than any other place in the world? It might be a place you know now or one you knew in childhood: a playroom, your workshop, a backyard, a playing field, a park, a vacation spot. Write about specific events that happened there.

 

C.     Getting Along with Someone: Write down the name of someone you have trouble getting along with. You may make up a name, but have a real person in mind. Write at least three ways in which you wish that person would change so that the two of you could get along better.

 

III. General Instructions:

 

A.     Essay #1 is due on Tuesday, January 17, 2006.

B.     Your essay should be at least five paragraphs and 2 - 3 pages in length.

C.     Please type or word process your paper and double-space.

D.     Put your name, course title, instructor, and date in the upper left-hand corner of your paper (see the example above).

E.      Create an interesting title for your essay.

F.      Retain a copy of the paper for yourself.
